David Astle

‘He’s the Sergeant Pepper of cryptic crosswords,’ according to award-winning Australian actor Geoffrey Rush. David Astle, best known as The Dictionary Guy on SBS’ Letters and Numbers, is a crossword maker in The Age and Sydney Morning Herald, as well as Wordplay columnist with Spectrum, David Astle is a full-time word nerd.

He’s the author of CluetopiaPuzzled, Puzzle & Words and Puzzles & Words 2.  He also composed such diverse diversions as Wordwit and Omega for Fairfax. While on the airwaves you can catch his weekly news clue for Radio National’s Sunday Extra with Jonathan Green.

If that’s not enough, he was part of a world conspiracy to invent a new word.
