Maria Katsonis

Maria’s career has spanned the private, public and non-government sectors. She began her career in the arts where she held a number of roles as a general manager, producer and arts management consultant before joining the Victorian public service where she was responsible for arts policy and industry development.


Maria is currently the Director, Governance in the Department of Premier and Cabinet (Victoria). She was previously the Executive Director of Public Policy and Organisation Reviews where she led reviews at the request of the Premier and Ministers. She has also held the role of Assistant Director, Social Policy in the Department of Premier and Cabinet where she provided advice to the Premier and Secretary on social policy issues.

In 2008, Maria experienced a severe episode of depression and was hospitalised for over a month. She now lives with an ongoing mental illness and has become a vocal advocate for mental health. She is a beyondblue Ambassador and a consumer advocate with Mental Health Australia. She has presented on her experience of mental illness to range of organisations in the public and private sectors.

Maria has a Master of Public Administration from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University where she was named a Lucius Littauer Fellow for academic achievement and commitment to public service. She is a Fellow of Leadership Victoria.

She has written a book about experience of mental illness and rebellion against a traditional Greek upbringing. Titled, The Good Greek Girl, the book is out through Ventura Press. Her writing has also been published in The Age, The Guardian, ArtsHub and New Paradigm.
